Appearance

Ginji is a blond-haired, brown eyed boy. Some people might notice that this is genetically highly unusual, but truthfully Ginji originally had more traditional dark brown hair until the day he first showed his powers (somehow the electrical surge bleached his hair permanently). He is 176 cm tall and weighs 62 kg. He usually wears baggy clothing and that often gives him the image of being a bit “thicker” than he really is. He’s actually pretty thin and doesn’t really have a super-defined body. He’s fit in the sense that he as muscle tone, but he’s no body-builder. He also is never well-fed so he’s never had the chance to have much body fat. His emotions are clearly shown on his face. His eyes are wide and happy. He lets his hair go all over the place, some of it spikes up and some of it falls on his face. Alternately, when he is Raitei, Ginji’s eyes are narrower, his hair is all the way spiked back, and his face is blank or angry.

Personality

Ginji suffers from something like disassociated identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder), that stems from trauma he suffered as a young child growing up in the slums of Mugenjou

For purposes of discussing Ginji’s disorder and both personalities, they will be given names. The core personality shall be called "Ginji" and the multiple shall be called "Raitei" (translated as “the Thunder Emperor”). Raitei is the name that Ginji’s followers assigned to him while he was ruling the Lower Town and is not intrinsically the name of his alter (Ginji mostly refers to the second personality as “my other self”) however, over time, Raitei has become associated with the pure destructive force that is Ginji’s alter.

Ginji is sweet, kind, compassionate, trusting, naive and a little childish (in a cute kind of way). He cares about people and the pain they have to go through. He trusts people automatically unless they do something to make him dislike them (for instance he automatically hates/dislikes/is scared of Akabane because the good doctor mercilessly murders a group of people and leaves their mutilated bodies in a place where the Getbackers come across them). He complains about simple things ("I'm hungry"). He comes across as nothing special, just a cute, innocent kid fighting for all the right reasons. He has no fear of expressing emotion (even sadness). He is very friendly and loveable. He is also a natural leader without realizing it. His words can stir people to action, but all he is doing is saying what he really thinks and feels. He's a people person, well liked by others, and he possesses a kind heart. His friends trust him and believe in him. He's loyal and kind and hates injustice. It was these latter personality traits that were the driving force behind the creation of his gang. It’s the reason people became so loyal to him. He also goes into ‘tare’ form whenever he gets seriously emotional (when it isn’t serious or something), lost, or needs to look innocent. This is like a cute, little, form of himself that is the size of a plushie or goes to other people’s shins. (In the anime/manga other characters actually do interact with him in this form. Clayman picks him up and squishes him like a plushie, while Ban attempts to shove him through the holes of a net and uses a baseball bat to ‘punish’ him when he does something stupid, so it is a visional pun as well as actually part of his character.)

Underneath this kind person is a power so strong that it was able to rule over the slums of Mugenjou with an electric fist. This power is his second personality. Raitei is cold, merciless and mostly emotionless (it's safe to say the only real emotion he feels is anger). He has no qualms about killing people and is basically the opposite of Ginji. Raitei is an arrogant force who wants only to destroy anything that is in his way. He has his own way of thinking and speaking (when he finds a reason to speak at all that is) that is very different from Ginji. He comes out when Ginji needs him (when there's a real threat to his life or the lives of people that he cares about) but this is a very bad thing. For one, Raitei has no alliances or loyalty. He is neither bad nor good. He simply is power, uncontrolled power, and that makes him very dangerous. For two, Ginji's mental state is slowly falling apart and the more he's Raitei the more he'll stay Raitei. The innocent Ginji also must face the horrible things Raitei has done the second they switch back. The guilt is almost too much for him to handle and the major cause of most of Ginji’s angst. Despite this Raitei’s major point is to protect Ginji. He appears when Ginji is suffering and tries to make whatever is making Ginji suffer disappear. It’s a horrible cycle though as the means Raitei uses to do that usually cause Ginji more pain.

Ginji, for the most part, tries to keep his "other self" under control and lives life the best he can. He's really affectionate with the people he's close to. He's clingy, he hugs frequently. Most of his friends are old members of his old gang or people that he's met through being a Getbacker with Ban. His best friend is Ban, of course, and he shows no sign of even realizing Ban has personal space. To Ginji, it’s much better to be open and happy and friendly than to worry about the things that hurt him, though he is still often haunted by his memories of his horrific past, Ban usually finds a way to snap him out of it.

Abilities/Strengths/Weakness/Weapons

Ginji is a human electric eel. He can generate electricity and do a variety of other things that are all centered around his electric powers, such as: controlling magnetic fields, summoning lightening storms, using plasma balls as a type of weapon, and healing at an astonishing rate (as Raitei he even heals a stab wound to the stomach almost instantly). His power is heightened by about a factor of ten (and maybe more) while he is Raitei and then those are heightened just as much while he is inside the twisted tower that is Mugenjou. His control over Raitei also diminishes at a frightening rate while he is in the tower.

However, Ginji cannot generate a lot of power on his own; he usually requires some kind of outside force to draw from (light sockets, power outlets, generators and electric wires are all examples). He can only create a small spark on his own, and only after “charging up”. He must "re-charge" after he overexerts himself and it is possible for him to "short circuit" (though this takes a lot of power, in the manga it happens when he calls down lightning and fries an entire sky scrapper). Summoning lightening storms and using strong magnetic fields also take time for him, as he has to pause and concentrate on it.

Ginji’s unstable personality is a major weakness in that he cannot control Raitei in the slightest when the alter takes over. Raitei’s actions usually leave Ginji with intense guilt and make him feel like a horrible person. Raitei’s destructive nature makes Ginji feel like he has to be on guard with his mind at all times. He is also extremely trusting which means that he can be taken advantage of, though usually he finds a way to get out of any bad traps… somehow. Ginji can’t generate a lot of his own power so he has to steal it from outside sources, in a place where there are no electrical outlets that means he’ll have no power source at all. He has no sense of direction to speak of, meaning he’ll probably get lost. He isn’t book smart at all, and is a little more than naive. He also has no ability to use weapons like blades or guns as he’s never had to before.

Ginji doesn’t use weapons. He has his powers and his fists. He does sometimes use his belt, which is made up of metal plates and can be flung around, as a way to carry electrical current to his enemies, but that’s about it. The gloves he wears also have metal plates on them, but he uses them mostly for defensive.

History

Ginji's earliest memory is of a stormy night when he was a young boy (probably around six). He woke up in a dingy room and cried until he was found and cared for by a man named Teshimine. Teshimine came out of the darkness and asked the little boy’s name, then undertook the task of raising him. Ginji was a very emotional child; he cried a lot and over everything. This only changed once he made some good friends. These were the friends that saw the beginnings of the great passion that Ginji has for protecting people. They were drawn to his kind nature and also his determination to make everything more comfortable for them. As a child he often told people that they would one day be able to leave Mugenjou if they wanted to, despite the fact that this was actually very unlikely. Mugenjou (roughly translated as the ‘Limited Fortress’) is a twisted tower in the middle of Shinjuku, a district of Tokyo, Japan. The tower itself has three levels; the top is called Babylon City (where the ‘gods’ of Mugenjou live), the middle the Beltline (know for its brutally powerful residents), and the bottom Lower Town (which is basically the worst slum imaginable with its denizens developing superpowers). Lower Town is where Ginji was raised and where he ruled.

Living in the slums of Lower Town was a tough life but Ginji and Teshimine survived. They were constantly under attack of the gangs in Lower Town and the monstrous people from the Beltline. Usually Teshimine joined the fight against Beltliners to protect Ginji and Ginji would watch and wait with the other children. After the attacks they would have to find out who had died. One day, a group of Beltliners came into Lower Town and began massacring people. In the attack Ginji witnessed the death of his good friend and as a result an electrical power overtook him. Something in his mind and body snapped and this was the first appearance of the powers that would guide Ginji's life and the alter personality that everyone would come to fear. He killed the attacking Beltliners in a matter a split-second (something grown men had never been able to accomplish). This attack was the first time anyone saw Ginji’s alter-ego, it is this moment when he first developed his personality disorder.

Years passed, and Ginji grew used to having his power and his insanity. People began to fear him and respect him and soon he was able to form a gang called Volts. They ruled over the slums and were the first real police force that made sure order was maintained in the town. He was supported by four kings (Shido, Kazuki, MakubeX and Masaki) and together they made up some of the most feared people in the whole of Lower Town. They also created a set of basic laws that finally gave the place some a kind of safety. Despite their tyranny, many people in Lower Town looked up to Ginji and his Kings as heroes. They symbolized hope that many people had not had before as well as the idea that someone cared about their well-being and could protect them from the monsters upstairs. It was also during the height of the Volts era that Teshimine walked out of Ginji’s life.

Then one day a man named Mido Ban came into the territory that Ginji ruled and the two of them ended up in a huge fight. No one knows exactly who won the fight, but it resulted in a huge crater in the ground of Lower Town and Ban suggesting that Ginji leave Mugenjou. Ginji had to process the idea of just leaving the place, but there was a lot at stake. At the end of their fight, when Ginji had returned to his rightful mindset, he told Ban his true feelings, that he was afraid of destroying the very Tower that held all of his friends. That is why, in the end, he made the choice to leave with the stranger.

Shortly after they left Mugenjou, the pair was implored by a mysterious man to take on the name "Getbackers" and become a recovery service. They took on the job and the task of "putting a puzzle together without seeing the picture". The result of their teaming up has been a complete change in both of them. Together they take part in a lot of different jobs and adventures and are close friends. Ginji's not sure where he would have been without Ban, but he knows he would have been a lot less happy.

Their favorite hang out, and the “headquarters” of the Getbackers operation, is the Honky Tonk café, owned by a man named Paul and worked in by a couple of really cute girls. Ban and Ginji get many jobs from the negotiator Hevn which often pits them against powerful Transporters and other enemies. Perhaps the one that Ginji likes the least is a man named Akabane, Ginji is terrified of him and despises him for what he stands off (needless murder for fun and all the things that remind Ginji of the reason he has his powers).

Ginji’s adventures with Ban have made him learn many things about himself and his friends. They sometimes have to go back into Mugenjou to solve some problem or to get something that was taken there. During one of these first ventures into the tower Ginji discovered that his gang had suffered a lot since he had disappeared. MakubeX, once like a little sibling to Ginji, had plans to create an atomic weapon to hold the creators of the tower hostage until they set free everyone who was forced to live there. Ginji was appalled by the disregard for the laws he had worked so hard to set in place in Mugenjou, but he did not blame the genius boy for doing them. He blamed himself. He realized that if he hadn’t had left Mugenjou then the people there wouldn’t have suffered so much. He also knew that he couldn’t stay for fear of killing everyone. He slowly came to realize that he needed to face his past, but embrace his present with Ban. He told MakubeX that he understood why the boy was suffering so much, but as long as people cared about him he wasn’t alone.

The Getbackers have had many missions, so of them have given Ginji views of Ban’s past. These include the fact that he used to be thief with a brother and sister (Yamato and Himiko) until fate dictated that Ban kill Yamato and set Himiko against him; and that he was friends the Miroku siblings (seven siblings that share the same body... no really) until he murdered their older sister. Despite the knowledge that Ban has done many horrible things Ginji still believes in him, because he understands the Ban of now. Nothing anyone can do will ever make him doubt Ban. Ever. He doesn’t pressure Ban to tell him everything also, since he knows there are things that people want to keep to themselves.

On another trip into Mugenjou Ginji learned that one of the men he trusted enough to be one of his Kings was actually working for the gods of Babylon City. This realization hurt him deeply but Masaki admitted that he had wanted to be on Ginji’s side. In the end the older man stood by Ginji as the Getbackers worked hard to save MakubeX and fight the gods for the greater good.

There are many things that Ginji has had to face, many truths he would rather not have faced, but he survives because he knows that Ban is with him, even when they aren’t together he knows that they are best friends and partners and nothing anyone can do will take that away from him. Ban saves him from despair and steals his sushi... but the sushi thing can be forgiven... mostly.
